AFL - CIO AI in the Workplace
The AFL- CIO's statement and principles on protecting workers and working with AI.
AI can make work safer, better, and more secure—but only if strong rules ensure it is used responsibly, with workers meaningfully involved in its design, deployment, and oversight. A worker-centered approach requires collective bargaining, accountability, and enforcement so employers cannot use AI in harmful or discriminatory ways. Historically, unions have guided major technological transitions, but past policies often favored corporate gains over workers. Today’s largely unregulated AI risks repeating those mistakes, threatening jobs, rights, and public services. Harm is not inevitable; with sensible policies and strong worker voice, AI can advance innovation while supporting democracy and benefiting everyone—not just tech companies.
